Oil Painting conservation
Technique
The KIAN Foundation completed the conservation of a historically valuable oil painting that had significant paint cracking across its surface. Upon careful analysis, the cracking was found to be caused by a combination of natural aging, environmental fluctuations in humidity and temperature, and the use of incompatible layering techniques by the original artist. These factors led to tension within the paint film, resulting in widespread craquelure. The Foundation’s conservation team carefully stabilized the affected areas, rehydrated brittle paint layers, and employed micro-filling and inpainting techniques to restore the painting’s visual coherence while maintaining its historical authenticity.
